FAQ on transport insurance
We have compiled the most frequently asked questions about transport insurance for you in our FAQ. Our experts will also be happy to provide you with individual advice.
Transport insurance protects your goods against typical risks during transportation. These include damage caused by accidents, improper handling, theft, fire, water ingress or natural events such as storms and flooding, etc.. Especially for international supply chains and valuable goods, it is a crucial component for security and reliability - so that your freight is well protected even in the event of unforeseen events.
Transport insurance protects your goods against typical risks during transportation: These include transport damage caused by accidents, improper handling or external influences, as well as losses due to theft or the complete loss of the shipment. Damage caused by fire, lightning or explosion is also covered, as is water damage - especially for sea and inland transportation. In addition, the insurance offers protection against natural hazards such as storms, floods or earthquakes.
As a rule, the following losses are excluded from the insurance cover: losses due to wilful intent or gross negligence on the part of the policyholder, losses due to war (may be included!), civil unrest or nuclear events, transport damage due to defective packaging and losses due to normal wear and tear of the goods. Furthermore, pure financial losses and indirect losses.
Transport insurance can be divided into different forms depending on requirements:
The individual policy offers protection for a clearly defined transportation process. The general policy covers all of a company's transports within a certain period of time. A framework contract provides customized cover for regular transports or special constellations.
Transport insurance is essential for many industries:
- Manufacturers and retailers use it to protect the shipment of their goods to customers or business partners.
- Logistics and forwarding companies protect their clients' goods during transportation.
- Construction companies also benefit from insurance cover when transporting building materials, machinery and equipment to construction sites.
- Even farmers use transport insurance to reliably protect their agricultural products and produce.
All-risk cover offers particularly comprehensive insurance protection: it basically covers all unforeseen losses, unless they are expressly excluded in the contract. Compared to traditional transport insurance, which only covers clearly defined risks, all-risk cover therefore offers a significantly higher level of security - ideal for complex or particularly valuable transports.
Typical exclusion clauses in transport insurance primarily concern situations in which damage is caused by intentional behavior or gross negligence on the part of the policyholder. Events such as war (may be included!), civil unrest or nuclear incidents are also generally not insured. Another frequent reason for exclusion is transport damage caused by defective or inadequate packaging. Finally, damage caused by normal wear and tear or natural wear and tear is also excluded from the insurance cover.
Yes, many transport insurance policies also include international insurance cover. However, it is worth taking a closer look at the respective policy conditions. This is the only way to ensure that all relevant risks are covered accordingly.
